Moving into The Future of Investment Accounting Operations

Abstract

Investment accounting represents a critical back office function for investment managers, insurers, and corporates—especially when intertwined with adjacent back office functions such as NAV production, regulatory reporting, fund administration, and cash management/ forecasting.

In these traditional back office activities, the push toward efficiency, broader use of automation, and cost reduction has driven many investment firms to rethink their partnership strategies and core value propositions. Firms are looking for viable paths to migrate away from legacy encumbrances toward embracing modern technology for core middle and back office investment and accounting operations.

However, outside of the largest 'bulge bracket' investment management firms, the ability to scale up and access the benefits of next-generation technologies (such as big data processing infrastructure, smart robotic automation, and AI/machine learning), and to have it collectively embedded into core applications such as investment accounting, are typically prohibitive due to cost barriers and limitations of in-house expertise.

In this Briefing Note, Celent provides our perspectives on SS&C Singularity, an investment accounting platform built "ground up" using a modern tech stack, and what it means for insurers and investment management firms looking to employ digital technologies that improve operational performance and reduce costs in a traditional back office function such as investment / fund accounting. This Briefing Note also highlights SS&C Singularity's solution proposition and provides our independent perspectives on the opportunities, benefits, implementation considerations and caution points for firms looking to chart their journey to leverage next generation capabilities.
