If you haven't heard of the phrase Vibe Coding in IT circles, it refers to the use of AI tools to generate code rather than having to write it yourself.
Where did Vibe Coding come from?
For those following AI in recent times and the low and no code platforms this won't come as a surprise. One of the early use cases for GenAI in IT and change departments was to automate building test data, test cases, even user-story requirements based on natural language input. I wonder how many of our readers have asked one of these tools to create a web page? We're discussing a natural extension of that.
In the last few years we saw this evolve into co-pilots for developers, tools that sit inside the developers interfaces and tools to help build and explain their code to them. Already, we're see these tools evolve so that they can build applications from scratch, or examine an existing code base, make simple changes, refactor the code base for larger changes and even remodel security in the application.
Vibe Coding in innovation hackathons or even just on side projects is a great way for change teams to play with the approach, test out the tools and learn about the new approach. With common tool stacks enabling DevSecOps automation pipelines testing, security validation and strong controls around the apps can be automatically built in.
What does it mean for Financial Services Firms?
We observed an increased appetite to build again, with the rise of low and no code platforms and the promise of Vibe Coding will push further investment that way for some assets.
There are opportunities in legacy modernisation as well with technologists already looking at opportunities to examine, query and even rewrite old code bases.
What does it mean for Software Vendors?
We have seen software vendors already move their release cycles from years to months, with SaaS offerings updated more frequently than that. There is a great opportunity to increase security, automation and speed, while increasing change through put at the same time. Of course, there will be greater expectations from the buyers of applications going forward.
