Rethinking: Will Insurers Be Connected to the Connected Car?
      26th September 2022
//Rethinking: Will Insurers Be Connected to the Connected Car?

In 2016, I wrote a report, Will Insurers Be Connected to the Connected Car?

A lot has changed since then. More cars are more connected. Those connected cars are creating a lot more data. Automobile manufacturers, insurers, and others are finding ways to monetize that data and to compete more effectively.

So, all in all, six years later, it feels like a good time to rethink that basic question: Will insurers be connected to the connected car?

This report tackles that question, but starts with the perspective of the automobile manufacturers, and then proceeds to what insurers can or should do. It ends by looking at strategic implications for the 10 largest personal auto insurers (who are very large) and for the next 90 auto insurers (who are not so large).

The focus in this report is on the US personal auto market. There is a limited amount of material on connected commercial vehicles, but that topic deserves its own report. There are also a few references to developments outside of the US (primarily focused on global auto manufacturers), but those regions also deserve separate treatment.

This report has quite a few footnotes—making it, in a sense, a source book for further investigation of various connected car topics.

      Enjoy the (connected) ride.
