Abstract

This report focuses on the growth and evolution of certain platform elements: third party solutions that are generally not developed and maintained by the platform sponsors. This report calls this set of third party solutions, an insurance platform ecosystem. Various other terms are also in use, such as a platform’s Marketplace or Exchange.

This report has three focuses:

  1. Defining and differentiating between the three prevalent types of platform sponsors: Core System Platform Sponsors, Technology Firm Platform Sponsors, and Insurer Platform Sponsors.
  2. Providing information about platform ecosystems offered by a number of platform sponsors. (Note: The platform ecosystems profiled in this report are important examples. However, they do not include all available platform ecosystems.)
  3. Examining the implications of platform ecosystems’ rapid development for platform sponsors, ecosystem participants, and insurers.
