Abstract

Snap polls reflect questions posed by members of the Celent Executive Research Panel, a group of C level executives in the insurance industry. This question came about from a member who wanted insights around how other members have designed their innovation organizations. Thirty-three insurers responded to this survey over the course of three days, June 15-18, 2021.

The question that was posed was:

Background:

This insurer is looking at their innovation practices and trying to decide whether they should create a team organized to focus on innovation and design thinking. They’re interested in what others are doing, how they’re staffed and any insights (pros/cons) you’ve seen related to your approach to innovation.

Questions:

Re: the organization — which of these is most like you?

We have one team that focuses on innovation and a separate team that focuses on design thinking/Jobs To Be Done (JBTD).

We have one team that focuses on both innovation and design thinking/JBTD.

We have a team that focuses on only one of those areas (which one)

We don’t have a separate team - it’s embedded in other work that we do

If you have teams dedicated to innovation and/or design thinking/JBTD

Who do they report to?

Approximately how many people are in each team

What kinds of roles are in the team?

How effective do you think they are and why?

If you don’t have teams dedicated to innovation and/or design thinking/JBTD

Why not?

How are you handling innovation in your organization

How effective do you think this is?
