Could the tide have turned? Are we starting to see a return to investment through signed deals? That appears to be the case, according to our latest deal trends reports from the Americas (both for P&C and for Life, and for Latin America and North America). What I find interesting from this research, and our related research into CIO priorities, is the growth around technologies to support distribution that has occurred worldwide since 2010.

What could be driving this? The shift in spending is due in part to changing customer demand around how they expect to be serviced, regardless of whether they are individual retail or corporate customers. It's not all about devices and multichannel, although that's certainly a big part of it. Straight-through processing (from the back office through to the front office, and traversing multiple distribution partners) is a hot topic the world over.

Another interesting observation is that whenever we look to find examples of great innovation across the industry, distribution and new business models influenced by distribution are often the place that we find them-which brings me neatly onto the focus of our next event.

On 3 October 2013 in San Francisco, we'll be holding our third annual event on disruptive innovation: What's Next: The Search for Disruptive Innovation. For the first time we'll join our three practices (Insurance, Banking, and Securities & Investments) together to explore how to innovate learning from outside the industry as well as from within, through a mix of case studies and industry observations.
