Fidelity's merger with Metavante is a bold move on both sides. I wouldn't have Fidelity to make such a large purchase, but rather expected them to acquire a smaller rival. It makes them a real power in the hosted market and both bring large payment businesses to the table. They will need to sort out what stays and what goes as they group now has three more core systems. Metavante's IBS, the Metavante/Temenos JV, and Bankway. On the payments side of the business both groups have strong offerings with eFunds, NYCE, Certegy as some of the better known brands.
