Controlling costs, enhancing resilience

We are proud to announce Derivation's upgraded Software as a Service (SaaS) solution is now live. Following the success of the original hosting platform, Derivation has sourced the newest technology in cloud computing to redesign and rebuild a new, enhanced model. The latest cloud-based solution features a cutting-edge high availability (HA) platform, providing clients with increased resilience and reduced operational risk. The HA platform makes service even faster, enabling a more robust and cost-effective deployment of our risk and portfolio management system.

Faster response, better solutions, no excuses

Derivation's SaaS solution comes neatly packaged as an option alongside the software and is an ideal choice for firms looking to operate immediately. With low spin-up times and minimal operating overhead for clients, start-up hedge funds are able to quickly bed-in infrastructure whilst established funds have already used the cloud-based platform to make viable a shadow PMS, or even to run in parallel in preparation for a permanent systems migration.

With total ownership and control of the hosted environment, Derivation's support team is able to see and resolve issues faster and implement more creative solutions to client queries. Implementation is further smoothed by reducing third party dependencies with our experienced system experts on hand to address client queries through all areas of the installation.

All this serves to deliver better client experience through end-to-end accountability and control: faster response times, more creative solutions for clients, and no excuses.

Multi-level resilience

Capitalising on the latest technological innovations, Derivation's SaaS solution has been engineered to ensure that clients have continuous access to their data. This world-class resilience has been ensured through 4 levels of protection: high quality infrastructure, real-time replication, off-site Disaster Recovery and a secure suite of back-ups.

Derivation has invested in high quality infrastructure to compliment the powerful new servers. The main and primary recovery system servers are held at a secure primary Tier 4 (ANSI.TIA-942 specification) data centre. Widely considered the gold standard, Tier 4 is the most robust type of centre including multiple independent power supplies, 24 hour security and access control. As an additional precaution, off-site Disaster Recovery is offered through a high-quality data centre, geographically removed from the main site.

Within the main site, the HA platform delivers updates in real time between the production server and primary recovery system through SQL Server AlwaysOn. In the event of the production server malfunctioning, fail-over to the primary recovery system is automatically handled in just 500 milliseconds. The secondary recovery system is maintained at a separate data centre in order to mitigate a total failure situation at the main site to ensure business continuity against a wide range of feasible scenarios.

In addition to the normal resilience procedures and as a further safety measure, a suite of back-ups are maintained. This ensures that in the event of a major catastrophe, service can be quickly resumed or data retrieved.

Ensuring data security

Maintaining visibility whilst ensuring that clients' data is kept secure is central to the Derivation mission with two distinct forms of security control offered dependent on location and requirement. In addition to a multi-layer log-in procedure, specific locations are permissioned for access with IP address whitelisting. For those who need access to the system whilst on the move, RSA hard tokens are issued giving users a unique passcode each time they log into Derivation from an unknown location.

Within the hosted architecture, each client is allocated their own discrete Virtual Machine and database. With no shared data and total control over their environment, clients can further granulate access by user to particular functions or portfolios through native software controls. Each client has the opportunity to tailor their use of the system, even managing and extracting data for bespoke functions or integrating to third party systems. With Derivation, clients have the flexibility of using their data in the way they want.

Driven to deliver excellence

Attaining the highest levels of client satisfaction is central to the philosophy of Derivation. By investing in the development of this cloud-based platform, Derivation takes full ownership and responsibility for the end-to-end service of this mission-critical system. This in turn allows access to a cost-effective, self-contained risk and portfolio management system for a broad range of clients, still with full connectivity to third-party systems.

Richard Bray, Derivation CEO, said "We strive for nothing less than delivering our clients the best in technology and experience. The outstanding High Availability provision we have introduced to our hosted version of Derivation ensures that we can deliver a seamless, secure and robust service. I believe that our newly developed SaaS solution, coupled with our excellent risk and portfolio management software offers clients the complete package."
